Beans, Beans, Beans…Let’s get a room of bean counters together and create some mosaic art. Bean mosaic crafts have been around for a long time! Beans come in a huge assortment of colors, shapes, and sizes. We used a mix for soup so it had all types of colors and shapes. Use our template with different designs to make it easy.

Supplies:

Kraftykid Mosaic Bean Design template

Cardstock cut in four squares

Beans, rice or peas (assortment)

Glue

Paintbrush

Paper bowl

Black pen

Dried beans (a variety, like different colored lentils, etc.) SAFETY NOTE: Raw kidney beans are poisonous if ingested. If you do choose to use kidney beans, make sure your child does not eat them.

Instructions:

1. Print the Kraftykid Mosaic Bean Design template on a piece of cardstock.

2. Cut into four pieces and give each child a design to work with on a covered work surface.

3. Pour some glue into a paper bowl. Dip the paintbrush into the glue and begin painting it from the center of the design outward. Paint the glue only one section at a time.

4. Place the beans on the glued section. Talk to children about colors and patterns or have them place just one kind of bean in each section.

5. Repeat gluing beans section by section.

6. It’s a good idea to wait a few minutes in between gluing each section so that the beans have time to dry.

7. Once all the sections have been filled with glue and beans, the mosaic is complete!

For another twist on this craft, instead of using beans to press into the mosaic, try using crinkled up balls of tissue paper in a variety of colors. Help children cut the tissue into little 2×2 inch squares and crumple each one into a tiny ball. Then press them into the glued sections following the same process as with the beans for a beautiful and colorful mosaic of a different kind!

Here is a free, eagle mask craft printable that you can make. It’s a great choice to celebrate patriotic holidays. Fringing the paper to look like feathers makes it a more challenging craft and lets kids practice their cutting skills with scissors.

This eagle mask craft is also a good Native American craft used for multi-cultural studies. In the Native American culture the eagle represents freedom and courage, and is considered the protector, carrier of prayers, visions & spirits.
