Coffee Can Drum

Supplies:
1 - Coffee can or cylinder oatmeal can with lid
2 - Unsharpened pencils or sticks
1 - Long piece of yarn or many rubber bands
1 - Piece of paper (optional)
Crayons, paint, glitter, or any decorations you want to use
 

Instructions:
1.  Paint the outside of the canister (Do not paint the top).
2.  Take two unsharpened pencils and yarn. 
3.  Wrap the yarn around the eraser part of the pencil continuously until you get a ball at the end of the pencil.   This is the mallet end of the drum stick.
4. Optional: When the paint on the canister is dried we can make the harness.  Punch a hole on either side of the drum, insert string, and tie a knot on the inside of the drum. - It is recommended that the parents punch the hole in the can (be careful!).
5.  When paint on the canister has dried, glue on the top of the canister.

Safety Note:  Pencils can pose a safety hazard, be sure to watch your children carefully.  If you make the optional harness, be sure to watch your children carefully as yarn, rope, and other objects can also pose a safety hazard.
